OKM Foundation

The CHERISH Programme is 10-year flagship integrated programme of  OKM Foundation aimed at restoring degraded ecosystems, strengthening climate resilience, improving livelihoods, and promoting sustainable community transformation across the Cherangany Hills Ecosystem covering Elgeyo/Marakwet, West Pokot, Uasin Gishu and Trans-Nzioa Counties. The programme is Patronized by Hon. Kipchumba Murkomen, CS Interior and National Administration and it targets to rehabilitate degraded landscapes, protection of critical water sources, biodiversity conservation, and creation of over 500,000 green jobs.

The programme integrates ecosystem restoration, climate resilience, green livelihoods, youth and women empowerment, education and skills development, nature-based enterprises, and strategic partnerships to build resilient ecosystems and inclusive green economies.

Phase One of the programme targets:

  • Rehabilitation of 10,000 hectares of degraded landscapes;
  • Restoration of 200 hectares of wetlands, riparian areas, and agro-ecosystems;
  • Protection of 5 springs and water sources;
  • Terracing of 1,000 hectares of the escarpments
  • Promotion of sustainable land use practices;
  • Establishment of green and circular economy industries;
  • Provision of scholarships and skills development opportunities;
  • Promotion of nature-positive enterprises and community conservation initiatives.

CHERISH also promotes peacebuilding, environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and community participation through initiatives such as sports tournaments, tree-growing campaigns, biodiversity conservation activities, and the Cherangany Peace & Conservation Run. Through partnerships with government, development partners, private sector organizations, academia, and communities, CHERISH seeks to create long-term environmental, social, and economic impact while contributing to Kenya’s climate resilience, restoration, and sustainable development agenda.
